The Milkman

The milk came in a liter bottle at the base wide, narrow at the neck with an envelope and put you threw an inner cover with pull-up tab that you after you poured a glass.

They were either not drink or Borden and Sheffield Farms Sheffield Farms customer a glass of milk Borden as a Giant fan would root for the Yankees to win the pennant. My family was Sheffield Farms all the way and in the third grade when they took us to the plant - I thinkIt was on Eleventh Avenue in the thirties, I felt like one of the owners. We watched them milk with a machine, pasteurizing the milk, put it in bottles and listened to them explain how Sheffield Farms milk is never touched by "the human hand."

This was before milk was homogenized. The cream always at the top and extended two or three inches down in the bottle. It was thicker and more yellow than the milk and either shaking the bottle to make it in, or your parents poured mixtureHim for their coffee. Bottles of cream, heavy and light, came in a half pint of replicas of milk bottles.

The milkman would pull his horse up outside a row of brownstones, put bottles of milk and cream in a metal container with square slots and a metal handle. The brownstones had bent down in advance of the first floor entrance, unlocked the door with glass panes, and then a small anteroom with a locked door. The windows on the first floor usually had filled window boxeswith red geraniums on the sills, and the family of the house were yesterday empty bottles in the lobby to leave an envelope with the milkman said, leaving how many new bottles. He had considered the new bottles on the floor, put the empties into the container, and then go to the next Braunstein. Some houses wanted their milk outside the basement entrance on the left. That was down three steps from street level, and the doors and windows were covered by black painted wrought iron bars.

When heto a dwelling house the milkman carried heavy wooden crates in the service elevators. The boxes were metal slots for the bottles and flanges that locked together fields when they were stacked in the milk wagon. He had floor-to-go-ground, so that today's delivery outside the service entrance to each apartment and picked up the empties. There was no self-service elevators in those days, so that the man had a lift on every floor, wait for the milkman deliveries. DeliveryWagon and the horse standing outside - the horse with his nose in a canvas bag of oats. We could talk about it and pat on the neck, or sometimes even the milkman would remove from the canvas bag, and we would keep an apple or a sugar cube flat on our palms, so the horse could bite without our fingers to grip.

My aunt said to have been Margaret quieter, more efficient and less smelly, but she always saw the bright side of everything. I liked theClattering sound of them coming down the street and not even think of the smell and sorry if the horses disappeared.

The Japanese had occupied the eastern coast of China, and then they control each port, but Hong Kong. Then France was against the Nazis, the Japanese Navy steamed into Camranh Bay, moved 30,000 troops into Saigon and signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy. Then the war began, and the single-family houses converted into accommodation. They replaced the glass panelDoors at the tops of stoops sealed with solid doors. Until then, the milkmen will be gone, and we had to walk to Broadway and down to buy the Eighty-Seventh Street Market, our milk.
